A Response to Detail 2025- Sayako

I chose this project because it is in Mosgiel , where I live now. The design is made to be friendly to the environment, using natural systems for energy and water. Even though it is built on a slope, it looks like a comfortable place to live. I only worry about heavy rain and whether it could handle a landslide. The building is also like a welfare facility that people of all ages—from children to adults—can use. I really like how simple the design is, and I want to live close to nature in the future.

Ileshaa Dias's project, my favorite at Detail 2025, is an appealing example of adaptive reuse that uses striking pink accents and a central integrated garden to sustainably enhance both community gathering and human well-being through biophilic design.

My favorite project at Detail 2025 is Kei te Puawai te Kakano designed by Sam Gradwell. It was designed for early childhood education center. I was attracted by the project because it has unique building and is surrounded by a lot of nature. This project aim to improve education of nature and grow children in place which is surrounded nature.

My favorite project is "Pathways at Jubilee - Youth Development &  Wellbeing Hub". This is for young people struggling with mental health.  The architectural framework is based on key concepts such as "safety, inclusiveness, flexible use, and connection to the community". It aims to create a space that supports young people's mental health and social connections. The exterior perspective drawing in the foreground depicts young people relaxing on the lawn and benches, emphasizing the space's role as a "place to pause and rest," including outdoors. I hope that teenager who have been hurt can receive treatment in such an environment.

I found this project, Nested in Nature by Hadley Taylor. This is the building such as a house, not public facilities. This aims for circular systems of energy, water, and food resilience and a low-impact life system. I mean, it is eco-friendly for environment.  This is built on a slope, not on a cliff. I think it's livable place, but I concern that if it's strong rainy and cause landslide, I don't know whether the building is able to endure that or not. However, I really like the building's design because it's simple and I honestly want to live around nature in the future.

This is my favorite project called Castle on the Cliff designed by Hannah Winter. This new design is for preserving Dunedin's rich building and its community. Although nobody uses this building now becasue of  its age, this new design might help community gather people and foster local activities. What really got me was that it has a music room where people can enjoy singing or playing the instruments. It might play a significant role for keeping community active.

My favorite project is Castle on the Cliff, designed by Hannah Winter. This building was oridinally known as Cargill's Castle, a landmark that once represented colonial influence and social status in Dunedin. Over time, the structure has shifted from being a private residence to a place intended for public gatherings and community events. I liked how the project forcuses on restoring the building while giving it a new purpose. It shows that old structures can still play an active role in a city's cultual identity. This made me think about my own hometown and how important it's to protect historic places and memories connected to them.

My favorite Project at Detail 2025 was”A New Chapter for Molyneux - Alexandra Recreation Centre”, designed by Li Xiaoke. It is a community   space where people from different backgrounds can meet, play sports, and join various activities. I was attracted to this project because the design feels warm, bright, and calm, and it creates an inviting atmosphere for everyone. The building also fits naturally into its surroundings near the Central Otago Rail Trail. With several access points and open pathways, it encourages people to stop by, interact, and enjoy the area. Overall, the project enhances the environment by connecting people and supporting a more livable, community-focused space.

My favorite project is Castle On The Cliff . It’s designed by Hannah Winter . Originally, it was a castle named "Cargill’s Castle ". It was great community significance, standing as a symbol of colonial wealth and power. This building was designed to be a place used for kinds of events. Also this building aims to maintain the cultural heritage of a city through the repurposing of building. It allows for the removal of memory and lessons needed to learn from past.  I felt that preserving the past and keeping memories in mind is ready important. I want to care for the old buildings in my hometown too.

THE SOUTH COMMONS, designed by Misty Mosen, is a thoughtfully planned social housing development. To further enhance social cohesion across generations, the site also includes a kindergarten and assisted-living housing. The project aims to strengthen the local community by creating an inclusive environment that supports residents of all ages, backgrounds, and income levels. The integration of both private and communal spaces creates a balance between personal and shared living, reinforcing the idea of a truly neighbourly environment.     I chose this model because its open structure makes the space feel very comfortable to live in, and if I were to live somewhere in the future, I would want a house like this.

My favorite project is TARRAS AIRPORT which is created by Carlin Huang.  This project is to build an airport in Tarras where is central otago in New Zealand. Moreover, Tarass is know for vast open landscaping, surrounding mountain and dry climate. That's why it is suits for creating an airport there I think. I attract this airport shape, it is like a bird wings !!    Entry to an airport and inside have open spaces, so many passengers easily to access for the destinations, but according to construction drawing, I couldn't find tourist places such as souvenirs shops, caffe and restaurant. There are only check-in counter, baggage claim and so on. Therefore, I think it is better to image/create tourist places as well in order to come and arrive many kinds of people.

What was your favourite project at Detail 2025 , who was it designed by and what was it designed for? Explain what attracted you to this building or complex of buildings and explain how its construction might enhance, rather than detract from, the environment in which it is located and the human experience of this environment. Title your post 'A Response to Detail 2025 -- Your Name' and illustrate your post with a photograph you took of a project model.

Finding Love - Yuka

Image
In my opinion, meeting someone face to face is the most natural way to build a relationship. Dating by online is risky. It takes a lot of energy to maintain digital conversations. And personally, I am not good at keeping in touch in online. I support finding love in real life, meeting people directly, and letting relationships develop organically. Real connections need time and trust, which are often easier to build face to face.

Finding Love - Nao

Image
I think the best way to find love is through real-life experiences. Meeting someone naturally feeils more honest and comfortable for me than using matching apps. Also I think apps is scared for me. Still, if love comes alomg naturally, I woukd be happy. For now, I just want to stay open to possibilities while living my life in a positive and meaningful way.

Finding love - Aguri Uno

Image
In my opinion, the best way to find love is meeting in our real life, not online. Some people is using matching app to meet someone recently. I think that it is another way to find love, but I feel a little bit scared to use online because I can't predict what happen. Moreover, it is high potential risk to be caught in serious incident. That is why meeting in real life is more realistic. Finding love is not easy and depends on luck and timing I think. If we want to have someone to build relationship, maybe we can't , but when we concentrate on ourself and once we learn to love ourself, we will be able to meet special person someday.   I believe that someday, someone important to me will come along.

Finding Love - Machi Kanada

Image
I prefer finding a special person in real life rather than looking for one online. In my view, matching apps feel a bit scary because I don't really know who the other person is, and it's hard to tell what is true and what is false. Although I've never used matching apps before.     I hope that love will come to me by chance  in daily life,   but I know it's actually quite difficult. Still, finding love is not my top priority right now. I'd like to spend my time wisely for the sake of my future.

Finding Love - Nico Saihara

I know MatchingApple is getting popular recently, but I don’t think I’m going to use it. I feel like it’s pretty difficult to find true love on those apps. I’m the type of person who wants to find love in real life. And honestly, I don’t really like it when people seem too deseparate  to look for someone. That kind of vibe isn’t really for me. I don’t like the idea of choosing my “type” on a phone. It feels strange, and I don’t enjoy that kind of situation. And I don’t want to be judged just by the picture I post on the app. 👶 Also, I have friends who use matching apps, but they’re not serious about it at all. it’s just for fun. So maybe that’s why I feel like using a matching app to look for true love isn’t the best idea.

Finding Love - Yuna

Image
I prefer meeting someone in real life to meeting them online to find a special partner because it's like romantic. Some people argue that using matching apps is better than meeting someone in real life to find a partner because it's easier to find them than in real life. However, there are risks which we can't expect, to use the apps. For example, some old men who want to meet young women, deceive the women. But, if you meet someone who you want to be with in real life, you don't have to be afraid of the risk. That's the reason why I prefer finding a special partner in real life.

Finding Love - Rino Nagata

Image
I think finding love in real life or online is almost same thing for me and both of them have some risks. It is easy for us to find someone who has same interests  in common online, but we can't tell what kind of people they really are. Also, misunderstandings are less likely to occur, and trust can develop more easily. However, it depends on timing and luck. As far as the way I find love is concerned, I expect love comes to my way incidentally because meeting someone naturally makes me feel more 'real' although I am not looking for it now becasue I am happy with where I am now (∀`*ゞ)エヘ

Finding Love - Hana Taniguchi

Image
In my opinion, the best way to find love is definitely in real life. Because If I find love in online, It will be so stressful for me. It will be lost my a lot of enegy and meeting someone who connected in online is scary for me. And even I don't want to 'look for that someone special', I'd like it to happen naturally, when the right time comes:))  But it not mean to I think finding love is not important. I think people can't live without living other people. People need support each other and share their feeling with their 'family'. Love is really important for Human's well being.  But try not to expect too much for love is also important I think. For living their own life!

Finding Love - Tamaki Yamada

Image
In today’s world, many people look for partners online, and I believe everyone should choose a way of searching that fits their personality. As for me, I feel that when my motivation for romance is low, I’m closer to my natural self, and that actually makes it easier for me to meet various types of people.

Finding Love - Sayako Uchiyama

Image
To be honest, I have never used a matching app. It’s not that I don’t like the idea, but I think talking to many people online would be difficult for me. I feel it would be tiring to chat all the time. So I prefer meeting someone naturally in my daily life. If I meet someone by chance—through my hobbies, work, or just everyday life—I think that would feel more real. I want a relationship where we can enjoy small everyday things together. In the future, I hope for a relationship where we are both independent, but still support each other.

Finding Love - Hyogo Oku

Image
I prefer finding love in real life community like school, workplace and so on. In addition, I believe having relationship with friend is better, not with a person who I meet to make partner. I know not only good point, also bad point of my friends. However, I think that  they tend to have relationship with person who meet online before they know each other deeply. That will lead to finish relationship earlier.

Finding Love - Ayane

Image
People find love in different ways. Some use apps, and others meet someone at school or work. I think both ways can work. For me, love usually comes when you are relaxed and being yourself. When you talk to new people and enjoy your daily life, you might meet someone naturally. I also think it’s okay not to hurry. Everyone has their own timing

Finding Love - Misaki

Image
To be honest, I’ve used matching app a year ago. However, it didn’t last long because I’m not good at keeping in touch with many people. Besides, It is quite exhausting to have the same conversation over and over again with different people. So, I prefer to love to come my way incidentally as me go about my daily life, if possible. Also, I wish for someone special to be my partner in life as I always want someone to share the little things of everyday life with. In the future, I want to have a relationship that is independent and supportive, rather than relying entirely on my partner.

Finding Love

Image
What, in your opinion, is the best way to find love? Do you prefer searching for 'that special person' online or in real life? Or perhaps rather than looking for love, do you expect love to come your way incidentally as you go about your daily life? Or then again, maybe finding love isn't such a priority for you. 'You're happy with where you are. thank you very much.' Let's hear what you have to say about this 'hot potato' of a topic. Title you post 'Finding Love -- Your Name' & accompany your post with a relevant image.

Kia Ora - Ayane

Image
The Maori word "kia ora" means "hello" or "thank you" People in NZ use it every day to say hi. For example, you can say  "kia ora!" when you meet someone. I think this word is interesting because it is short, friendly, and shows Maori culture.

WhanaungatangaーNao

Whanaungatanga means connection or relationship in Maori. It's about building bonds through care, trust and shared experiences. In Maori culture, Whanaungatanga remainds us that no one stands alone. We are all connected through our families, friends, and communities. When I think of Whanaungatanga, I feel gradeful for the people around me. It means valuing others, supporting one another, and creating warmth wherever   go.

Wairua -- Hana Taniguchi

I choose 'wairua'. It is mean a spirit   associated with a person or thing, according to Maori  beliefs.  It refers to the non physical part of a person that exists beyond the body.  'Wai' means water and 'Rua' means two. So, this word express two flow of water. some example sentence are Her wairua is strong and full of light. The wairua of this place feels peaceful. I still feel his wairua around me. I think this word is interesting because I’m fascinated by the spiritual beliefs and worldviews of different peoples. It is fun to know how people have same beliefs in diffrent world.

ALOHA ʻAU – Sayako

Image
November 12, 2025 Aloha ʻau means “love from me.” It is a way to send kindness and peace from my heart to others. In Hawaiian culture, aloha is not only a greeting — it is a way of living with love, care, and respect. When I say aloha ʻau , I share part of my heart. It means giving love freely and spreading warmth to the world around me.

Kai - Miyako

Image
The word “kai ”  comes from the Māori language and means “food  ” or “to eat ” . It is a very common word in New Zealand English. People often use it when talking about meals or eating together. We had some delicious kai at the barbecue last weekend. I find this word interesting because I love eating, and I think food brings people together. I also like how New Zealand English includes Māori words like kai , which make the language more unique and connected to the culture.

Kia kaha - Yuna

Image
Kia kaha means "stay strong". Kia means " to be" or " to have" when combine with another word and Haka means "strong", "able", or "courageous".  Example sentences:  Kia kaha, you'll get it done! (when encouraging someone to finish a task) We send out thoughts to everyone in New Zealand today. Kia kaha (a message of solidarity)

Moana - Tamaki Yamada

Image
The Maori word moana means “sea’ or “ocean”. People in New Zealand sometimes use it in English when talking about the sea. For example, we can say, “We walked by the beach and looked at the moana.” I think this word is interesting because it sounds nice and shows how important the ocean is to Maori people and to New Zealand. It also helps keep the Maori language alive in everyday life.

AROHA - NICO

Image
Aroha is known as a word that expresses love. In New Zealand, it is a Maori word that means big love, compassion, and kindness. It’s more than just a feeling ― it expresses deep connection, understanding, and care between people. The idea of aroha teaches us to show respect and unconditional love for others.

Karakia-Misaki Otoku

Image
Karakia are Maori incantations and player used to invoke spiritual guidance and protection. They are also considered a formal greeting when beginning a ceremony. In my house, my host sister and brother sometimes do karakia  before eating dinner. I think it is similar to Japanese " Itadakimasu ". When we Japanese say it, we are thankful that food can be eaten.  〜Example sentences〜 1. let's say Karakia before eating dinner! 2. we say Karakia to show gratitude for the delicious food we have. 3. we say Karakia at special events like birthdays, funerals, or when someone graduate from school.

Moko - Hyogo Oku

Image
Moko is Maori tattoo. Some Maori has Moko on not only body but also face. It has been used to identify  person's tribe, rank, achievements, role in society and so on. Also, there are some kind of Moko, for example, Moko kauae is chin tattoo for maori women. Example sentences 1 Moko shows person's identity, like rank and tribe. 2 To get a Moko, Maori use traditional instruments.  I sometime find people who has tattoos on face in New Zealand, and wanted to know meaning of that. That's why I choose this word. It has traditional meaning and I find there is some type of Moko in Maori culture.

Tukutuku- Rino Nagata

Image
Tukutuku   is traditional latticework to decorate meeting houses called wharenui, and these panels were tied or sewn together. Two people worked on them, one on each side. Although it is traditionally important art for marori, it is time-consuming craft that demands patience and persistance. Also, the number of peoeple who can make Tukutuku is getting smaller. Example setences 1. Tukutuku has a strong connection between Maori people and their own culture. 2. I was impressed by seeing Tukutuku because its design was sophisticated. I think some of Maori words show us the way we hear the sound. And what interesting is that  tukutuku is similar to kind of Japanese  o nomatopoeias, so I chose this word.

Pōhutukawa - Yuka Shinohara

Image
Pohutukawa is a famous tree in New Zealand, often called the "New Zealand Christmas tree." It grows by the coast and has bright red flowers that bloom in December. The tree is important in Māori culture and is linked to legends and traditions.  The p ōhutukawa  is known for its strong roots, which help it survive on rocky cliffs near the ocean. Its red flowers are a symbol of beauty and strength in New Zealand. Also , due to the introduction of non-native species, it is now facing extinction. Example Sentences - The p ōhutukawa  blooms with red flowers in summer. A p ōhutukawa  tree grows near the beach. Māori legends say the p ōhutukawa  guides spirits on their final journey. I chose this theme because there was a  family photo taken under the Pōhutukawa in my host family's home.

Kea - Aguri Uno

Image
Kea is the parrot which originated in southern alps in New Zealand. They are known for the most intelligent bird in the world. Kea have green body and sharp beak, and are sociable and friendly, that's why they maybe come closer when they find curious things. Maori people gave the name Kea, describe sounds of ''kee-aa''. ~Example sentences~ 1.  Kea was named after crying which sounded like ''kee-aa'' 2. Kea sometimes get into mischief.  When I went to Kiwi Park at Queenstown during the last holiday, I saw Kea. Moreover, Kea came close for me, and then bit my hand. It was so painful for me, but became good memory of New Zealand. That's why I'm interested in about it.

Waka - Machi Kanada

Image
Waka are Maori watercraft, usually canoes ranging in size from small, unornamented canoes used for fishing and river travel to large, decorated war canoes up to 40 metres long. - Example Sentences - 1. The Maori ancestors arrived in Aotearoa by waka. 2. A beautifully carved waka was displayed at the museum. 3. Each tribe traces its origins to a different waka. I studied the boats that the ancient Maori people used for whaling in my New Zealand Study class last term. I became interested in Maori boats, so I chose the word "waka."

Maori Loan Words in New Zealand English

Image
Let's write about words that New Zealand English has borrowed from Maori. Choose a word or phrase from the list of English words of Maori origin on Wikipedia. Explain what the word or phrase means, share an example sentence in which the word or phrase is used (you can find or create one), and say why you find it interesting. Title your post 'The Word -- Your Name' e.g. 'Kia Kaha -- Kenta Yamaguchi', and add a relevant image to your post.

Finding Your Passion & Making It Your Job - Nao Hosokawa

I want to use English in the future job, because it allows me to connect with people from different countries. Recently, I've become interested in working for a cosmetics or magazine company. In the future, I'd love to have a job where I can travel abroad for business and experience different cultures.Like Emma said, I think trying new thoings will help me discover what I'm truly passionate about.

After watching Emma Rosan's talk, I learned that choosing a job is not only about what you do but also about how you work. For me, a good workplace is where I can talk with people easily and share my ideas freely. I like a friendly place more than a strict or competitive one. In that kind of environment, I can feel comfortable and do my best.

In the future, I want to have a job that involves moving my body. I enjoy talking with people and working hard toward goals. I also hope to have a job where I can use English, even just a little. I’m not the type of person who wants to sit in an office all day using a computer or sell things I don’t believe in. So, I think I’m a bit similar to Emma’s type. For me, the most important thing in work is feeling happy and motivated by what I do.  I also agree with Emma that happiness is the most important thing in work. For me, being happy means that doing what I love and feeling proud of what I do.

Finding Your Passion & Making It Your Job - Misaki OTOKU

If it possible, I’d like to use English as much as I can in my future work.   Actually, I’ve already had a job offer from trading company because I’m 22 and I have to start to work soon when I go back to Japan ! When I started my job hunting, I realized that I’m not fit for salesperson because I’m not extrovert and outgoing person, obviously. I partly disagree with Emma’s opinion. I’d like to concentrate on one job. Of course, I know experience is important to our life, but I believe that it’s more valuable to became passionate about one job and master that skills! Also I totally agree with “happiness is important”. Earning money of course makes me happy, but if I disliked the job, I'd feel awful every day. I feel that working in a way that improves our quality of life is the most important thing for living.

In the future, I’d like to make use of my patience and keep working without giving up on anything, because I think my strength is to continue doing something without it’s difficult. I’d like to work with many people, but I actually don’t want to go to the office every day because I think it’s inefficient for me. I’d prefer to work from my home. We can do that nowadays since we have a lap top and the internet. If I were an office worker, it would be easy for me to work from home.  I also want to work as an office worker in the future because I’ve never had that kind of job before, and I think it suits me.  I agree with Emma’s idea. I feel happy when I earn money by working. I think I can live comfortably as long as I have enough money.

Finding Your Passion & Making It Your Job -- Rino Nagata

I have been thinking to work for a big campany because I want to do something international using my English skills. Also, I could feel I'm one of the important employee of big company. Although it's not easy for me, I want to try something unsual, something I can't do in Japan to see the world that I've never seen. I think choosing a job based on experiences or knowledges are quite important to last your job. Otherwise, you might leave your job very soon and it doesn't make you motivate for working for long time. So, there shouldn't be much of a gap between what I expected and what I actually do.  I think portfolio career will become common because there are a lot of job now today and a lot of choices you can make. However, some people leave their job very soon and it means they might become impatient because some of them think that it is easy to leave their job and find another one. I'm not sure what makes me feel happy when I start to work. However, it i...

I want to become a cabin attendant in the future because I like helping people and using English to communicate. When I travel by airplane, I always admire how cabin attendants work. They are kind, professional, and always make passengers feel safe and comfortable. Working as a CA will not be easy, but I want to challenge myself. I hope to work for an international airline and meet people from all over the world. Through this job, I can learn about different cultures and improve my communication skills. Q.1  Emma also suggests it is important to do multiple work placements in a range of careers. That way you can choose a job based on knowledge and experience rather than assumptions, hearsay and expectations. Is this something you would like to try? If so, how could you make it happen? That is something I'd like to try. To make it happen, I should change jobs many time in my life. It is difficult that finding job which suits me, so i should try some job which I'm interesting in. In my country, it is  thought that working hard at same workplace is better than trying some kind jobs. However, in my opinion, I should try some kind jobs and have many experience in my life. That will make my life be more happy and satisfying. Also I think it is not important that working in big company. Working in place which I want to work is much better than that.  I'd like to use the English and communication skills I got through studying abroad in New Zealand in my future work. I don't like leading a team and writing reports, but I like talking with people, so I think I can solve problems by cooperating with others. Through my job, I'd like to meet many people, learn new ways of thinking, and broaden my perspective. And my ideal working environment is mainly office based, but I'd like to go on business trips abroad and work with people in different countries. I also want to try different types of work by joining internships before job hunting. However, I can't imagine myself having a portfolio career, because I like to complete tasks perfectly. So I think my personality doesn't fit that style. I agree with the idea that "ultimately, it's all about happiness." What makes me happy at work is getting experiences that interest me and discovering new sides of myself.
